Russia struck Zaporizhzhia and other parts of Ukraine after Kyiv launched a large weekend drone barrage against targets inside Russia. Residential buildings, a university, and commercial property were damaged in Zaporizhzhia, where several people were wounded.
Additional Russian attacks were reported across multiple Ukrainian regions. In Kharkiv, officials said a drone strike killed a woman and injured her son. Both sides said they intercepted many incoming drones, but the expanding reach of the attacks continues to expose civilians and infrastructure.
Pressure grows around energy targets
Ukraine has used long-range drones against Russian refineries and other facilities it says support Moscow’s war effort. Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s power system, military sites, and urban areas. Nearby countries have also reported drone incursions into their airspace.
The renewed escalation comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepares for meetings during the United Nations General Assembly. Efforts to limit attacks on critical infrastructure have yet to produce a lasting agreement.
