Street Cleaning Rules Pause, but Parking Meters Still Apply

Read the sign even on a holiday

Alternate-side parking is suspended Monday, October 12, but other parking rules, including meters, remain in force, according to NYC311. The holiday does not provide a general exemption from curb restrictions.

City public schools and Department of Education offices are closed. NYC311 advises checking whether a particular school is actually in recess before relying on the school-zone parking exception.

Public services follow different schedules

The city’s holiday page lists government office and public library closures, with no mail delivery. It separately says the Staten Island Ferry operates its normal schedule.

These differences make it useful to check the specific service rather than treat the holiday as a universal shutdown. Travelers should also review current transit alerts, because planned subway work is a separate issue from office closures.
