A new form of household support

New York City plans to begin distributing free dog and cat food at 22 city-funded food pantries on October 19. The selected locations cover all five boroughs, according to an October 15 announcement from the mayor’s office and the Department of Social Services.

The initiative has a $500,000 allocation. It is a targeted addition to the city’s food-assistance system, rather than a service offered at every pantry. The broader Community Food Connection program supports more than 700 pantries, and officials cite $78 million for food distribution in fiscal 2027.

Check before making a trip

Residents can consult the participating-location list in the city announcement. Because the stated start date is Monday, October 19, the announcement should not be interpreted as confirmation that supplies are available today.

A useful next step for a household is to confirm the chosen pantry’s operating hours and current arrangements before travelling there. Keeping pet assistance alongside grocery distribution could make a visit simpler for families, but the value will depend on reliable access to the particular supplies they need.
