The New York Knicks earned their first victory of the 2026–27 season Tuesday night, beating the Detroit Pistons 111–97 at Madison Square Garden. Karl-Anthony Towns led the defending champions with 27 points and a season-high 20 rebounds, while Jalen Brunson added 23 points and seven assists. The result ended an 0–3 start and gave New York a needed reset after three close, uneven games opened its title defense.
The final margin concealed a difficult first quarter. Detroit scored 38 points in the opening period and led by 13, forcing the Knicks to chase the game again. New York steadied itself before halftime, closing the second quarter with a 19–8 run to take a 51–50 lead. That response mattered because it turned a game that appeared to be slipping away into a one-possession contest before the break.
New York decided the game in the third quarter. The Knicks outscored Detroit 37–13, with Towns producing 13 points in the period and controlling the glass. Their defense reduced the Pistons’ clean looks, and the offense created enough transition and half-court opportunities to build a lead that reached 25 by the end of the quarter. New York eventually led by as many as 27.
Detroit made the score more respectable in the fourth, winning the period 34–21 and cutting the deficit to 11, but the earlier surge had created too much distance. Paul Reed led the Pistons with 22 points and nine rebounds. Cade Cunningham finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, falling just short of a triple-double. Detroit had entered the night seeking its first 4–0 start since the 2018–19 season.
For the Knicks, the victory was more than a mark in the standings. New York had lost six consecutive meetings with Detroit, and an 0–4 start would have placed the team in rare historical company for a reigning champion. Reuters reported that no defending NBA champion had opened 0–4 since Boston in 1969–70. The Knicks avoided that comparison by pairing their strongest rebounding performance of the young season with a decisive defensive quarter.
Towns’ line illustrated the value of interior control when perimeter shooting and early execution are uneven. His 20 rebounds limited some second chances and helped New York finish possessions. Brunson provided the backcourt scoring and playmaking expected of the team’s lead guard, while OG Anunoby and reserve Landry Shamet contributed 13 points apiece. The scoring balance meant Detroit could not solve the game simply by loading its defense toward one creator.
One victory does not erase the issues visible during the opening week. The Knicks still allowed a 38-point first quarter and relaxed enough for Detroit to win the fourth by 13. Those swings will remain a concern against stronger opponents. Yet the third quarter also showed the team’s ceiling: connected defense, controlled rebounding and an offense able to turn stops into a rapid change in the game’s shape.
New York leaves the night at 1–3, with a result to build on rather than a crisis to explain. The season is too young for broad conclusions, but the path forward is clearer. If the Knicks can reproduce the defensive pressure and rebounding that powered Tuesday’s 24-point third-quarter advantage—without first surrendering a large opening deficit—the champions can move beyond their slow start and toward the steadier identity that carried last season’s run.
