A wider neighborhood network

New York City announced October 15 that Citi Bike has completed an expansion of more than 230 stations across seven neighborhoods. The added locations serve Norwood, Riverdale, Brownsville, East New York, Kensington, Bay Ridge and Forest Hills, according to the mayor’s office.

The project includes more than 3,700 docks and brings the system’s service area to 86.5 square miles. City officials say 62 percent of New Yorkers now live inside that area. Lyft operates and maintains the stations, while the transportation department works with communities on their placement.

Access and availability are different tests

Further docks are planned this fall in existing high-demand areas. For riders, the practical test will be whether a bicycle and an available return space are present when needed. A station on a map is a useful start; a dependable connection requires both.

Anyone planning a trip should check current station availability before setting out, especially when the journey includes a timed connection. The city’s announcement describes expanded infrastructure, rather than a guarantee of bicycle availability at every location.
